MALAGA City Hall has put the new bicycle police unit into motion. The new unit will being its work after feria (fair) and will initially be functioning throughout the whole year. According to Mayor Francisco de la Torre, the unit’s officers will focus their activity in the areas that are ‘ideal’ for this type of vehicle, including pedestrian areas, bicycle lanes and beach promenades, although they will also be able to move to other areas if needed.
The unit has been planned to set off in phases; the first stage is to begin in August with a group of ten officers. De la Torre also pointed out that the new unit will be an environmentally sustainable and silent way give officers more access to pedestrian and crowded areas. He also said that the venture was going to “bring police officers closer to citizens” and cyclists given that part of their task will be to insure that the city’s bike lanes are being used correctly.
