THE oldest horse race in Spain is underway at the beach of Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cadiz, gathers thousands to watch and bet on the international participants. This year the event, which was declared a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest of Spain, takes place over two three-day periods. The races began Sunday and the next is due to take place between August 27 and 29. Dating back to 1845, the horses thunder along the sand just inches from the Mediterranean at low tide, starting from the mouth of the Guadalquivir River at dusk.
