Rubbish collectors uphold intention to strike

MARBELLA rubbish collectors have decided to uphold the strike planned for August. However, there will be a general assembly this week to confirm the proposed dates, which include Thursday August 16 and Saturday 18.

The strike has been motivated by the recent local government decisions to readjust work hours for RSU (Solid Urban Residue) workers to 35 weekly hours, which would make them lose 10 days off, and possibly threaten several job positions. Given that rubbish collectors have to work every day of the year, these workers have traditionally been entitled to 25 days off per year in compensation for the Sundays and holidays they have to work. According to RSU employees, this new measure would make many workers expendable because more employees will always be on hand for the same workload as always. Several labour unions have joined forces to help the collective fight for their work hours to remain the same, with a strike that will leave tons of rubbish on the streets on Marbella in the middle of August.
