    MIJAS - THE Mayor of Mijas, Antonio Sanchez, has announced plans to invest six million euros in the town once the central government approves the 26 projects presented to be financed for the State Fund for Local Investment. The mayor said the plan is to create infrastructures and employment for local people, at the same time saving money and energy in the town.

    NERJA - THE Provincial Government plans to start work on the Rio de la Miel and Maro roads in Nerja, which were damaged by floods in September 2007 and have deteriorated considerably again with recent rains.

    COSTA DEL SOL - SEVEN of the Costa del Sol’s watch towers, dating back to the Arab period, have been repaired. They are Torre de Maro and Torre de Caleta, in Nerja; Torre de la Sal in Casares; Torre del Saladillo in Estepona, and Torre de las Bovedas, Torre de Lance de las Cañas and Torre de Rio Real in Marbella, with a total investment of more than 907,000 euros.

    MARBELLA - TWO men have been sentenced by the Provincial Court to five years each in prison for kidnapping two men for 36 hours in July 2007. The sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court. The accused and another man who has not been identified approached the victims at the Ronda Golf de Torrequebrada Urbanisation in Benalmadena.

    Gala_Haiti_11_web MALAGA - A CHARITY gala was held at the Cervantes Theatre in Malaga to raise funds for Haiti and included the performances of local artists Danza Invisible, Los Tres Tenores del Humor, Efecto Mariposa and Lorena. The mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre closed the event and thanked the artists and audience for attending.

    MALAGA - THE Municipal Urban Planning Department of Malaga Town Hall has begun work to improve the area surrounding the Picasso Museum and the cathedral, as part of the Malaga Tourism Plan and thanks to an agreement with the Junta de Andalucia. Two projects worth 22.1 million euros have been put out to public tender, which include improving paving and lighting in the areas.

    MALAGA PROVINCE - FIFTEEN people had to be evacuated from their homes in Alhaurin de la Torre last weekend when the Guadalhorce River broke its banks. There were another 26 emergencies due to flooding in Estepona, Marbella, Benahavis, Ardales and Mijas. The A-354 in Casarabonela had to be closed when it collapsed, and large rocks buried three homes in the town centre.

    FUENGIROLA Town Hall is creating a Traffic Control Room at the Local Police station which will receive images via wi-fi from 10 cameras installed in the most problematic areas of the town.

    DSC00663_web ARROYO DE LA MIEL - TWO thousand euros in cash and a gold plated silver monstrance worth around eight thousand euros were stolen from the Inmaculada Concepcion Church in Arroyo de la Miel last week. The thieves entered the church through a side window during the night or early morning and broke into a wardrobe where they found the money. They then had a look around the church and stole the monstrance which is used to hold the host. The damage they caused to the church is also considerable. National Police are investigating.

    Image showing child dressed as fireman at Torremolinos open day TORREMOLINOS - THE Mayor of Torremolinos, Pedro Fernandez Montes and other local dignitaries visited the local fire station to celebrate the day of the patron saint of firemen, San Juan de Dios. The mayor witnessed the award-giving ceremony for the different events which had taken place to celebrate the day. He also visited the facilities.

    MALAGA - THE body of a 56-year-old man was found floating at the mouth of the Guadalhorce river in Malaga. The body of the man, who had been reported missing some days ago and was carrying his ID in his pocket, was found by a passer-by near the Jose Maria Martin Carpena Sports Stadium. There are no investigating and awaiting an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.

    MALAGA - THE 44-year-old owner of a potentially dangerous Pit Bull Terrier has been charged with damages and crimes against general interests and public order, after his dog snatched a Yorkshire Terrier from the arms of its owner. The events took place when two women were walking the little dog in Malaga city and noticed the other dog, loose and without a muzzle, with its owner on the other side of the road.

    TORREMOLINOS - A MAN who helped his 12-year-old daughter and two other girls escape from the Sol de Abril centre for minors in San Roque and then reported her disappearance has been arrested. He had twice been denied custody of the child by the Junta de Andalucia, but Peter Jan W. M. put up posters with the photo of Sasha all over Torremolinos, asked everyone he met to help him find her, publicly denounced the safety of the centre and criticized the Guardia Civil and the Police, but during an operation codenamed Sol, officers found that the girl had been hidden in his home all along.

    BENALMADENA - THE Public Prosecutors Office is asking for one year in prison for the former Mayor of Benalmadena, Enrique Bolin, for granting planning permission for a house despite having been given an official report which claimed the project would break urban planning laws. The permission was later modified, allowing an extension which was also allegedly illegal.

    IMG_6110_web MALAGA - Chris Bryant MP, Minister of State for Europe and Consular Affairs announced a new agreement on Sunday which will see a Spanish civil servant working out of British Consulates in a bid to help British Citizens in Spain. The announcement was made at the British Consulate in Malaga, where Bryant was joined by British Ambassador for Spain, Giles Paxman; British Consul to Andalucia Steve Jones; Minister of State for Territorial Affairs Gaspar Zarrias; and the Junta de Andalucia Housing and Town Planning Minister Juan Espadas.

    MALAGA - THREE crew-members off the Boudicca cruise ship which stopped off in Malaga Port last week had to be rushed to Carlos Haya Hospital after suffering severe burns from a water leak in the ship’s boiler-room. The ship left Southampton on March 3 with 831 passengers and 331 crew members aboard.

    MALAGA - BUILDERS who are carrying out repairs in the Dos Hermanas district of Malaga are having to be escorted by National Police after they were insulted, coerced and shaken by 20 unemployed residents in the area who had been paid to carry out the work on previous occasions.

    Moya_y_Antonio_Moreno_web BENALMADENA - AT a plenary meeting held this week, all the parties in the Benalmadena council voted in favour of a the town declaring that it is against animal abuse, and will not grant licences for circuses which include live animals. This makes Benalmadena the first town in the province to declare itself Free of Circuses with Animals, and the third town in Andalucia, with Castilleja del Campo in Sevilla and Priego de Cordoba.

    MARBELLA - PARENTS in Marbella are worried that, as already happened in 2009, there will not be enough places for all the children in local schools this year, especially because some who were at public schools will now be moved to state schools because of the economic crisis. Until March 31, parents in Andalucia will be doing their best to get their children into the school they desire.

    Zapata_web ALHAURIN DE LA TORRE - THE Zapata area in Alhaurin de la Torre is having most of its streets improved and resurfaced, greatly benefiting the 500 plus people who live there. This is possible thanks to an agreement between the town hall and Endesa, which is burying electrical cables in the area as part of the works on Malaga Airport. All underground infrastructures, including drainage, sewage, drinking water and lighting will be improved for a cost of 230,000 euros including resurfacing.

More than 20 children from Marbella’s ASPANDEM (Asociacion a favor de las personas con discapacidad en la Costa del Sol) take part in these specialized lessons, all between the ages of 18 and 35.

    MALAGA - LOCAL POLICE in Malaga arrested three men aged between 26 and 39, for the alleged theft of materials from a building site. Although there was no sign of forced entry, the officers were puzzled to see the three men working on a Sunday. One of them told the officers he was the guard and that they were moving the material so they could watch a football match.

    elintrepidoviaje_web MALAGA - THE Picasso Museum in Malaga (MPM) continues to organise shows for children as part of the Kids at the MPM cycle. On Sundays, at 12pm, until April 11, the whole family can enjoy A Box Full of Surprises, Caramel Words, and puppet show by the María Parrato company. Awarded for Best Show, FETEN 2009, and recommended for children from six years upwards, the show lasts approximately 60 minutes and is in Spanish. Admission is two euros.

    PAD_th_March_2010_018_web MARBELLA - More than 6,000 euros was raised at a charity Luncheon in La Regina Restaurant in Marbella on March 4th. PAD – the animal charity are desperate for funds due to the terrible flooding they have recently suffered. Nigel Goldman and Stephen Howes organised the event in record time, and Nigel held a very successful auction of donated goods. Daniela Moreli – the owner of La Regina laid on a wonderful spread and some 60 people paid 75euros each to attend.

    MALAGA - THE Malaga Metro will have its own National Police station, at the Guadalmedina underground station, which will be located near El Corte Ingles. This was proposed by the National Police and the Government Sub-delegation, and will be located at this station as it is closer to the city centre and will be larger than others.
