TWENTY-TWO squatter families will lose their homes in ‘Casas de Maestros,’ Almeria. According to a recent plenary session held at city hall, the illegal homes will soon be torn down due to structural and superficial damages the 42 homes have suffered throughout the years. The homes will be replaced by subsidised houses in the future; however, the families that are living inside the apartments must be evicted first.
Expert evaluations have shown that the structures have become waterlogged and damaged, potentially jeopardising the safety of the 60-year-old building and anyone inside or around it. The occupants are said to have connected their homes illegally to the electrical and water supply causing further safety risk to the inhabitants. It is not yet clear what will happen to the squatters, although the Social Affairs councillor stated that they will be helped.
