    20100313-DELFIN03_web MOJACAR - MEMBERS of the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service, SEPRONA, from Garrucha and several volunteers in the area were able to save a dolphin on Playa de Macenas in Mojacar at the weekend. The Guardia Civil received a call to alert them that the dolphin was stranded on the beach and immediately put the protocol for this type of situations into action.

    ROQUETAS DE MAR - THE Provincial Court has sentenced a 20-year-old woman to five years in prison for stabbing her friend in the stomach in June 2008 when the two argued about some photographs. The woman, who lives in Roquetas de Mar, has been found guilty of attempted manslaughter and is forbidden from coming within 100 metres of the victim for nine years.

    C-FRJX_CRJ_1000_web ALMERIA - THE flight between Almeria and Madrid operated by Air Nostrum will soon have one of the most modern regional planes in the sector, the CRJ1000, made by the Canadian company Bombardier with capacity for 100 people. Air Nostrum will be the first company in the world to use this plane, and plans to incorporate 34 more into its fleet between now and 2016.

    SEVEN vehicles were found burned at an industrial warehouse in Nijar, at exit 494 of the A-7 motorway. The cause of the blaze is unknown, but fortunately no-one was injured. Police are investigating.

    SIERRO - THE castle in Sierro, one of the province’s most emblematic Nasrid monuments, has been totally refurbished, and it is hoped that it will bring more tourists to the area.

    CARBONERAS - MEMBERS of Carboneras Town Hall recently attended the inauguration of the area surrounding the San Andres Castle and the Glorieta square, accompanied by the hundreds of local residents. The improvement of this area cost 1.3 million euros and has been possible thanks to the central government’s Plan E and promoted by the council.

    ALMERIA - ALMERIA University’s Health Promotion Unit is carrying out a campaign this month with courses and workshops to teach the students at La Cañada campus to stay healthy. The university has also signed an agreement with the Delegation for Equality which intends to eradicate drug use on campus, not only the so-called hard drugs but also alcohol and tobacco. There will be 35,000 euros invested in the Project.

    Spain_Almeria_Alcazaba_web ALMERIA - THE Almeria Municipal Tourism Company is planning to promote the area on-line with interactive sites which aim to encourage tourists from all over the world. Under the slogan ‘Enamorados de Almeria’ (In love with Almeria), the campaign will show all the resources and sights which the province and mainly the capital city have to offer.

    ALCOLEA - THE Lucainena area, which belongs to Alcolea, will be cut off from the rest of the province for four weeks. The AL-6400 has been closed from the A-348 in Alcolea to the A-1175 in Berja via Lucainena and Darrical due to constant landslides in the area and the collapse of several walls, which make the road extremely dangerous.

    EL EJIDO - A 33-YEAR-OLD Moroccan man has been sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter, for killing a 24-year-old compatriot in June 2008. Apparently the two men lived just metres away from each other in a shanty-town on the outskirts of El Ejido. The victim allegedly entered the home of the accused, knife in hand, intending to steal any valuable objects he could find.

    EL EJIDO - A MAN from El Ejido was arrested for pretending that he had been mugged, to get his own back on four men that he had a grudge against. The detainee claimed that four men jumped on him when he was walking along the street and began to kick and punch him in the head, before stealing his wallet, a mobile phone his jacket and shoes.

    VICAR - POLICE are searching for the authors of racist graffiti which appeared on the facades of several shops owned by immigrants in the town. They read ‘death to foreigners’, ‘let’s kill the Moors’ and ‘the Spanish first’, and are accompanied by neo-Nazi symbology.

    ALMERIA - THE second phase of the new terminal of Almeria Airport is almost complete and it is hoped that it will be inaugurated some time near the end of this year. The new departures area was finished last June and was a significant improvement to the airport. The project has cost 37 million euros and included the demolition of part of the building dating back to the sixties. The number of check-in desks is being increased, as are the boarding gates and commercial areas, and the arrivals area is being refurbished.

    UNA_JOVEN_CANTAORA_ACOMPAADA_POR_HUGO_DEL_PINO_web ROQUETAS DE MAR has held the XV Encuentro de Peñas Flamencas, organised by the local Culture Department with the collaboration of the Provincial Federation of Flamenco Groups in Almeria. The performance of El Niño de la Chata and his group took place last Friday with homage to guitarist Norberto Torres and singer Alfonso Salmeron, who had dedicated 50 years of his life to singing flamenco.

    ALMERIA - A 22-YEAR-OLD Moroccan woman who abandoned her newborn baby in a rubbish container on January 31, 2008, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempted murder. The sentence also prevents her from claiming custody of the child at any time, although she will have to pay the child 30,000 euros in compensation. The baby girl was taken into the care of the Junta de Andalucia and is with a foster family.

    ALMERIA - A 29-year-old man from Almeria, Jorge Antonio Lopez Callejon, who has been studying in Malaga for four years, has gone missing from his home in the city. He is 1.80m tall, strong build, with blue eyes and a tattoo with the word Neo on his forearm. He was wearing a brown and green raincoat. He is suffering from depression and was receiving psychiatric care.

    MONICA_NARANJO_PRENSA_web ROQUETAS DE MAR - SPANISH pop diva, Monica Naranja, offered an unforgettable concert last Saturday at the Teatro Auditorio in Roquetas de Mar as part of her Adagio Tour. During the concert, photos of Monica in her childhood and youth were shown on a huge screen, as well as an animation film which depicted her as a puppet. The musical arrangements were provided by the Madrid Symphonic Film Orchestra, directed by Pepe Herrero.

    ADRA - MEMBERS of the Cruz Roja have created a programme to teach elderly people in the town how to save water and power in their homes to contribute to a more healthy environment. They received low-energy bulbs and water saving items, as well as pamphlets to explain how they are used. Cruz Roja believes that a better environment leads to better mental and physical health, but also that seven out of ten pensioners in Spain receive less than 481 euros per month for their pension and that any measure that can help them to save money will be positive. The campaign has been very well received locally.

    Staffordshire_Bull_Terrier_600_web ALBOX - THE Health, Environment and Safety Council in Albox has issued a statement regarding the ownership of dangerous dogs. Owners of Pitt Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu, Dobermans and crosses of any of these breeds must acquire a municipal licence and register the animal in the Municipal Pet Register.

    DSC00758_web VICAR - THE Government Sub-Delegate in Almeria, Andres Heras, signed a collaboration agreement with the Mayor of Vicar, Antonio Bonilla, regarding safety issues. It aims to put systems in place which will improve coordination and allow information, data bases and communication systems shared between the Guardia Civil and the Local Police, to improve service for residents in the area.
