BENIDORM Town Hall is planning to terminate the contract it has with Park Control 2000 SL for blue line parking and towing services due to a number of serious mistakes the company has incurred in since the beginning of the contract in 2008. A report counts as many as 36 infractions in this space of time and these could result in fines of up to 6,000 euros for each one.

THE City Council has acknowledged the difficulties currently faced by young people, with the construction of an extensive youth housing project. The Third Vice President of the Generalitat Valencia and Councillor for the Environment, Water, Urbanism and Housing, Juan Cotino, has signed an agreement with the Mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, approving plans for the construction of a new sheltered housing estate exclusively offered to youngsters of the municipality aged 18 to 35 years.

FRUSTRATED residents were finally given an outlet to voice their thoughts and opinions concerning Expat life in Spain. A meeting was organized in conjunction with the British Consular Services, and held at the Hotel Cabo Cervera, Torrevieja, to discuss some of the problems that are faced by British citizens now living in the Valencian Community.

SAN JAVIER - THE Mayor of San Javier, Pepa Garcia and the director of Jazz San Javier 2010 Alberto Nieto, presented the poster and a preview of the programme for the XIII edition of the San Javier International Jazz Festival. Artists that are already lined up to play include American rock legend Chris Isaak, the celebrated pianist Chucho Valdés, Dianne Reeves, one of the most important voices in contemporary jazz, James Carter Quintet, Roy Hargrove Quintet, led by the trumpet virtuoso Roy Hargrove and Barrelhouse Chuck & Lluís Coloma Quinteto, an extraordinary collaboration between two virtuosos of the blues piano and boogie-woogie.

ALTEA - POLICE in Altea, Alicante, arrested Veselin Vlahovic, known as the Monster of Grbavica, a Serbian war criminal, believed to have killed more than 100 women and children during the Balkan war. He was arrested during an operation against Eastern European gangs who were breaking into houses and shops in the area.

Ibi - A 59-YEAR-OLD man was seriously injured on his way into work in a factory in Ibi, Alicante, as an electricity pylon crashed down on his head. He is recovering in the intensive care unit with acute head injuries.

A local derby between blanquiazul “Herculigans” and franjiverde “Jove Elx” got off to a frenzied start when members of the opposing fan clubs instigated a riot. The two groups, originating from the north and south sides of Elche city, are known rivals and trouble is always anticipated when they meet. Therefore, Police were on standby and maximum security measures in place, which were implemented at the first sniff of trouble, although not before the groups had already come to blows outside of the Herculana club.

ALICANTE - A man was arrested in Alicante City for attempting to burn down the house of a couple he was allegedly having a dispute with. The 28-year-old man, who had a previous criminal record for arson from 2005, is thought to have started the fire in the only exit of the house while the couple was sleeping inside.

Isabel Davies Atherton was born in September 2010, around the time when the law allowing health care was being withdrawn from British citizens in the Valencian Community. Sadly, she was suffering from Down’s syndrome and several holes in her heart, requiring life-saving surgery if she stood any chances of recovery, but withdrawal of her SIP card disqualified her from healthcare in Spain.

Xabia - PRIMARY children from Xabia International College were very excited to take part in World Maths Day, playing maths games on-line with other children from around the world. Some even got to play against children from their own class. Everyone did really well and most of the children came 1st or 2nd in their games.

Following recent police interventions at Alicante port, local youngsters gathered in their masses once again, laying stakes on the territory. The large groups of youths who have transformed the area into a trendy hangout flocked in their masses and continued to party through until the early hours. Owners of the hotels Meliá and Porta Maris are devastated by the effects that the “gangs” are having on the reputation of their establishments and discomfort being caused to their guests.

Alicante - An investigation has uncovered more fiscal related fraud across the Province, to the tune of 1.2 million euros. A Civil Servant from Alicante has been found guilty of fiscal fraud summing 1.2 million euros, after filing for divorce from her husband. The defendant, named as Amparo Paloma G.S, faces a hefty fine as well as an 8 year prison sentence for embezzlement, levying and fraud.

Benidorm will be joining those towns that no longer have bullfighting shows after the National Bullfighting Commission stated no more events could take place until the debt owed to them is paid. It seems the man who held the concession, Francisco Romero, who has since disappeared, neglected to pay the fees, and until these have been paid, no one is allowed to use the bull ring or take over the concession.

ALICANTE - National Police Officers have arrested two young men as suspected authors of three violent robberies in different areas of Alicante in a space of 24 hours. When the two suspects, of 19 and 21 years of age, where taken to the police barracks, the last victim of the attacks, who was reporting the crime, instantly claimed to recognize one of them as the person that had threatened him with a large knife just hours before.

TORREVIEJA - Over the past few years there has been a bit of confusion over the state of Torrevieja’s beaches; and the flying of flags. There are a number of different organisations that survey beaches for quality control, with the Blue Flag being recognised as the most common guide to quality. However, Torrevieja has taken a different stance and invited other companies to grade their beaches and facilities. The result being that Blue Quality flags are but one that shall be flying over her beaches this summer.

Alfas del Pi is currently offering fully funded Spanish classes for foreigners wishing to learn. The aim is to aid the integration of foreigners in the community that has residents from over a 100 nationalities. The current group, with 25 pupils of Dutch, Norwegian, British, German and Swedish origin, began clases on Tuesday, March 2.

ALICANTE - CAR sales in Alicante are still rising according to figures from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, and in February, 4,441 new cars were registered in the province, which is an amazing 85.5 per cent more than the same time last year. This is mainly thanks to rent-a-car companies which, after a bad year, are seeing business returning and purchasing vehicles.

DOLORES - The 45-year old woman was detained by Agents of the Guardia Civil of Dolores following reports of small quantities of various drugs being sold from a small café bar and mainly to youngsters. When they entered the establishment, the eight people who had been seated around a table panicked throwing the ‘cigarettes’ that they had been smoking along with bags containing various quantities of cocaine. One of the women, who was eventually detained, was found carrying 8 grams of cocaine, divided into bags of 2 grams each, 3 bags of 1 gram 6 of 0.5 grams and 750 euros in cash.

GANDIA - Two men who attempted to rob a jewellers in Gandia were caught on camera being thrown out of the shop by its owner. One of the men arrived at the shop wearing a motorcycle helmet and pretending to be from a messenger company, while his accomplice waited outside on a motorbike.

DEDICATED walkers were out in force, but it was not the breathtaking vision of Lake Pedrera, nor the brilliant sunshine, that was their chief motivation. Belen Juste awarded each of the ‘Qualitur’ approved Tourist Information Offices throughout the Valencian Community with a certificate of commendation for their commitment to offering the highest standards of service to visitors.
