Wine production to increase 20 per cent by next harvest
• 24 Jul 2008 •
THE president of the association of vine-growers of the Serrania de Ronda, Francisco Retamero, said recently that this year’s wine production will increase by 20 per cent; 100,000 wine bottles more than last year.
Nonetheless, Retamero remained cautious and emphasised that the climate could still pose a possible threat to this prediction.
However, he said that the growth in production was a result of two fundamental factors: the rise in the number of cultivated hectares (200) and the increase in the number of cellars in Ronda and along the region.
Regarding production in 2007, Retamero said that this year, it had reached 500,000 bottles, of which 96 per cent was red wine, two per cent rosé and two per cent white wine.
He went on to say that currently, certain native grape varieties are being experimented with such as La Tintilla de Rota, Graciamo and Melonera; the latter being grown in the mountainous regions.
Retamero also took the opportunity to stress some of the problems faced by the wine sector.
The general consensus is that one such obstacle is the urban development plan, which is inhibiting the expansion of some vineyards, specifically five that wish to extend their cultivation area.
Ronda wines are sold to countries like Switzerland, France and Germany.
Earlier this year, Ronda hosted the first meeting of wine reviewers; an event that brought together the best wine experts and journalists from all over the world. | Return to Top
