Algarve international motorbike meeting
• 24 Jul 2008 •
THE most traditional of all motorbike meetings returned to the Algarve last weekend, bringing a great display of bikes and riders to Faro for yet another year. Starting last week, there were four days of festivity, with partying and concerts filling the venue with entertainment.
The main day was on Saturday with performances by UK based Blues Brothers tribute show 11-piece band Jake and Elwood, Portuguese top rock band Xutos and Pontapes and legendary rock guitarist Gary Moore. In a career dating back to the 1960s, Gary Moore has played with artists including Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II, Greg Lake and the blues-rock band Skid Row as well as having a successful solo career. Among many cameo appearances over the years, he joined Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lyne and Tom Petty to perform the lead guitar solo on ‘She’s My Baby’ from the Travelling Wilburys Vol 3. This was Gary Moore’s first performance in the Algarve.
Thousands of motorbikers visited the region to participate in this year’s edition of the International Motorcycle Rally which is the largest of its kind in Portugal and one of the most important in Europe, with some 40,000 participants. The event, which took place at a plot located near Faro Airport, included a motorbike exhibition and the election of Miss Faro 2008.
On the morning of Sunday, July 20, thousands of bikers rode the traditional circuit of the city of Faro, giving local people the opportunity to see some incredible motorbikes as they drove through the streets.
The organisation had some 950 volunteers on site this year to assist the thousands of motorbikes which descended upon the Algarve, coming from Portugal as well as from several other European countries. | Return to Top
