Government reiterates the introduction of motorway tolls

• 26 Jun 2008 •

Minister Mario Lino.THE Public Works and Transport Minister Mario Lino confirmed this week that the government will go ahead with their decision to replace the shadow toll system on three motorways with real tolls before the general elections in 2009.

Mario Lino was reacting to news which came out last week in some of the Portuguese media pointing to the possibility of the government considering that the introduction of tolls just a few months before the elections could have a considerable negative impact on the results of the poll for the ruling Socialist Party.

One of the promises made by Prime Minister Jose Socrates during the campaign for the last general elections was that if he won, the motorways which were operating under the “free to the user” system at that time would remain toll-free.

The minister denied that the planned introduction of toll booths on the motorways of Grande Porto, Norte Litoral and Costa de Prata, has anything to do with the coming general elections and explained that the delay has been due to the recalculation of traffic volumes on the roads ahead of the changeover.

Although this time he didn’t made any comment about the Algarve Via do Infante motorway, Mario Lino has recently confirmed that the A22 motorway will continue to operate without tolls at least until the next general elections.
