• 19 Jun 2008 •
UNICAJA Foundation recently organised performances by the Moldovian National Ballet Company in Alora and Mijas. This is part of the tour that the company is offering in Spain. which will visit some 30 towns and cities.
The company, which performed Coppelia, was founded some 50 years ago and is one of the most prestigious in the world.
Entrance to the performance was free and was very popular with local people and foreign residents of all ages and nationalities.
The company will be performing again in the Teatro Canovas in Malaga city on June 26 at 9pm and in the Teatro Municipal Vicente Espinel in Ronda, on July 1 at 8.30pm.
Coppelia is a sentimental comic ballet with original choreography by Arthur Saint-Léon. Set to a ballet libretto by Saint-Léon and Charles Nuittier with music by Léo Delibes. It was based upon a macabre story by E.T.A. Hoffmann entitled "Der Sandmann" ("The Sandman"), published in 1815.
The story Coppelia concerns a mysterious and faintly diabolical inventor, Doctor Coppélius, who has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so life-like that Franz, a village swain, is infatuated with it setting aside his true heart's desire, Swanilde, who in Act II shows him his folly, by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life. | Return to Top
