Finisterra in art form

• 29 May 2008 •

AT the end of June, three exhibitions will open simultaneously in Loule, Almancil and Vale do Lobo. These exhibitions, open until the end of July/August, form just part of one big project, entitled, ‘Finisterra’ (World’s end) and will bring to the Algarve seven promising young artists from the contemporary art scene.

Organized by curator, Maria do Mar Fazenda and coordinated by Centro Cultural Sao Lourenço in cooperation with the town council of Loule and Vale do Lobo Resort, it will be presented in three different premises: Sao Lourenco Cultural Centre, in Almancil, Convento Espirito Santo Art Gallery in Loule and Vale do Lobo Art Gallery. The purpose is to present new works by artists, Andre Banha, Goncalo Sena, Hugo Canoilas, Lucia Prancha, Luis Nobre, Pedro Gomes and Renata Sancho.

“Selection of the artists to be shown was made according to their ability demonstrated in earlier works, to treat the key subject of Landscape in the large sense of the word: description of natural landscape, intervention into the landscape, house and world, idyllic territory, imaginary landscape, the idea of a map.

The idea was to bring together artists who would treat the theme through different approaches which would be based on drawing, in three dimensional form. The idea of line or cut (territorial) is what unites these works as they describe and build up simultaneously, a concept of Finisterra,” Maria do Mar Fazenda said.

The exhibition is part of a programme, entitled ‘Allgarve’, an initiative of the Tourist Office which has the support of the Ministry of Culture.
