Suspect device alert

• 08 May 2008 •

Suspect device alertGUARDIA CIVIL officers, along with Policia Local from Rojales, cordoned off the car park of the supermarket Consum between Quesada and Torrevieja off the CV-95 Crevillente road, as bomb disposal experts were summoned from Alicante to deal with a suspect package. The device was discovered at 11am on Saturday morning by a cleaning lady who was emptying the bins in the car park. The package was wrapped in plastic and sealed with electrical tape and had a mobile phone stuck to the outside of it. The woman placed the suspected improvised explosive device (IED) on the ground and immediately alerted the authorities. The car park was cleared of all vehicles, the shutters were dropped on the surrounding businesses of the commercial centre and the area sealed off by police.

Detectives from Almoradi’s Policia Judicial patrolled the cordon as Mayor of Rojales Antonio Martinez arrived in time to see the explosives’ experts arrive from Alicante an hour later. The suspect IED was inspected and declared safe as officers revealed it contained only a portable DVD player that had been packaged up and somehow a mobile phone had got stuck to the outside of it. The package was removed, the cordon lifted and Consum opened its doors for business as usual.

Three explosive devices were detonated successfully in the Basque Country over the bank holiday weekend causing damage but no injury. In previous years ETA, the Basque separatist terrorist organisation, has implemented several bombing campaigns on the Costa Blanca. In August 2002, a car bomb was detonated outside the Queen Burger bar in Torrevieja; the six-year-old daughter of a police officer and a 50-year-old man died in Santa Pola and 40 people were injured when an IED exploded at a bus stop; and in January 2008, a 17-year- old explosive device was discovered by a plumber in Torrevieja’s Hotel Cano hidden behind a panel in a ladies lavatory.

ETA bombs were also set off in Alicante and Benidorm in July 2003.

If you see a suspicious package, telephone the emergency services on 112 where English-speaking operators will take your call.
