Algarve Central Hospital to open in 2013 |
PRIME MINISTER Jose Socrates visited the Algarve last weekend to announce the opening of bids for the construction contract of the new Algarve Central Hospital.
The project, which is worth around 250 million euros, will introduce medical treatments previously unavailable at Faro’s old hospital, such as vascular and paediatric surgery, endocrinology and nutrition, medical genetics, nuclear medicine, neuroradiology and radiotherapy.
The hospital will also have a medical research unit, as well as a dedicated cancer treatment facility fitted with state- of-the-art technology for diagnosis, including magnetic resonance imaging and three-dimensional ultrasound ecography. The new hospital which will be built near Algarve Stadium will have 10 operating theatres, 549 in-patient beds, and an extra 15 specialist palliative care beds, as well as 89 doctors’ consulting rooms.
The prime minister announced that the work is expected to be completed by 2013, adding that the new hospital will be ready to serve a population of around 800,000 people, half of whom are permanent residents and the remaining 400,000 are the tourists who visit the region. Socrates added that the project for the new Algarve Central Hospital will be a public/private sector partnership, with the private investors being responsible for the construction of the building, as well as the purchase and installation of the equipment.
The new hospital is scheduled to serve the populations of nine Algarve municipalities, Albufeira, Loule, Faro, Olhao, Sao Bras de Alportel, Tavira, Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo Antonio. | Return to Top
