Swedish king and queen commence state visit to Portugal

Royal visitors with President and Mrs Cavaco Silva

KING Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, began a three-day state visit to Portugal on Monday, at the invitation of the President of the Republic Cavaco Silva and his wife, Maria Alves da Silva.

The king was presented with military honours during a ceremony conducted in the grounds of the Jeronimos Monastery, and laid a wreath on the tomb of the Portuguese poet Luis de Camoes.

Later, in the Palace of Belem, the two couples gathered together, prior to a meeting between the President of Portugal and the King of Sweden, after which the two Heads of State held a press conference.

The two couples then had lunch in the palace residence.
