AFTER watching some excellent rugby the day before in the ‘Six Nations’ tournament, it was down to the vets in Elche to show how it was done in the old days. After a very close-run game the day before against Denia, the Old Brodleians headed down to Elche for a round robin with Elche and Murcia vets.
At half-time, Old Brods went in 5-0 up. The second half continued much as the first finished, but, just before the final whistle, the Old Brods broke through to score their second try and to kill the game off, finishing 10-0 winners.
This was a marked improvement on last year’s game by Elche Vets. This year Elche were given a rest and the second game was Old Brods against Murcia.
Old Brods started off the brighter of the two teams and after a few more handbags and one of the Murcia players getting a yellow card, Old Brods’ young winger’s first touch of the ball picked up a loose pass to go over for a try to give them a chance of winning, Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and the Old Brods went down 10-5, which was a little harsh on them when a draw would have been a fairer result.
The final game was Murcia against Elche. The game went from end to end with neither team having the killing punch and Elche, having the better chances in the game with the final ball not been given out on the overlap, finishing the first half even.
The second half was much the same as the first, with Elche having the better chances but unfortunately they were to pay for those missed opportunities right at the very end when Murcia found the gap to go over and win the game 5-0. |
