Blood donation marathon

• 06 Nov 2008 •

Andalucia’s blood reserves: In short supply.ALMERIA held a blood donation marathon organized by the Blood Transfusion Centre on October 31 at the Rafael Florido Sports Hall.

It is the first time that this marathon was held in Almeria. The Blood Transfusion Centre had a good response from Almeria residents, at similar levels as other provinces of Andalucia that held similar events. In Granada they collected 600 units of blood, in Malaga 525, in Sevilla 456, in Huelva 323 and in Cadiz 235 units. The donation process only takes 15 minutes. The aim of this blood donation campaign was to alleviate blood shortages that sometimes affects Andalucia.

Thirteen health professionals took part in this event, among them: doctors, nurses and administrative assistants. Three rooms were set up in the Rafael Florido Sports Hall, which together with the Blood Transfusion Centre’s blood donation bus, amounted to a total of 35 beds. Plasma was also donated. The Almeria’s Blood Donors Association, the Red Cross, the Civil Protection Service and the town council all collaborated in this event.
