British Consul for Andalucia retires
• 06 Nov 2008 •
THE British Ambassador, Mrs Denise Holt, held a cocktail party at the Parador del Golf in Malaga to mark the retirement of Bruce A McIntyre, MBE, the British Consul for Andalucia. Over 90 VIP guests attended the event, among them: Ecuador’s Honorary General Consul, Pepe Garcia Castillo, CUDECA founder, Joan Hunt OBE, REM’s Maurice Boland, Mary Harboe, Age Concern Association President, Charles Betty and his wife Irene, members of the Spanish Consular Service, and The Euro Weekly News.
After drinks and canapés were served, Ambassador Holt made a speech, in English and Spanish, praising and thanking the retired Consul for his tireless efforts over the past eight years, serving the needs of Britons across Andalucia. “He has been part of the fabric of Andalucian life over the past eight years,” she said.
Following her tribute to Mr McIntire, she presented him with a commemorative silver plaque on which, written in Spanish, were engraved the following words. ‘To our dear friend and colleague, Bruce A McIntyre, United Kingdom Consul, in memory and gratefulness for your efforts as the accredited Consular Body’s Dean in Malaga. November 2008.’
Mr McIntyre then delivered his retirement speech, in which he thanked all those who had supported him over the years, saying, “It is a bittersweet day. Sad because I leave after eight wonderful years as Andalucia’s British Consul, but also happy that I will be able to do whatever I want with my time, without the phone and mobile ringing 24 hours a day. That said, before I can do as I please, my wife has a long list of chores for me to do around the house. Perhaps once I finish them, I will be able to play more golf and improve my handicap.” He then told the celebrity crowd that he had every intention of continuing to live in Malaga. With 28 years diplomatic service overseas and eight in Andalucia, McIntyre revealed that, if one was to add his experience with that of his father and brother, it would come to a staggering 100 years of service to the British Crown.
Pepe Garcia Castillo, Ecuador’s Honorary General Consul, finished the presentation with a heart-warming and funny speech of his own. He recollected, “When I was speaking to someone some years ago, they asked me whether the British would return Gibraltar to the Spanish. ‘Never mind Gibraltar, they would be happy if they returned Torremolinos to the Spanish,’ I told him.” | Return to Top
