Most people search for holidays on the Internet
• 02 Oct 2008 • ACCORDING to the results of a study conducted by Marktest, Portugal’s leading statistical information private company, most Portuguese Internet users rely on the World Wide Web to obtain information on travelling.
Among the 400 people questioned in the poll, 57.5 per cent answered that they prefer the Internet as their main information source on travel, while only four per cent said they resort to specialized publications.
The results of the study, carried out among residents in continental Portugal, aged between 18 and 64, also showed that travel agencies are used by more than 17 per cent of the holiday searchers, while 11 per cent said they follow the advice of family members or friends.
The study concluded that the Internet has become one of the most effective means through which to promote the tourism sector. Another subject alluded to in the poll involved the services and results of research which have been sought on the Internet by holidaymakers over the last 12 months. The study concluded that the areas of information most in demand related to the culture, traditions or events of a specific holiday destination and almost half of the people said they had decided to visit a specific place after having surfed the internet.
Men, people aged between 35 and 44, as well as residents of the central coastal region and people of higher social rank are among those groups who make a greater use of the Internet to gather information on travelling.
The study, which was conducted between July 27 and September 7, showed that, according to gender, men present a higher response rate when asked about visiting a specific place, booking a hotel or choosing a restaurant in a specific place. Women presented higher rates in reading about culture, traditions or events peculiar to a specific place, choosing attractions or activities to see or do and buying the airplane tickets. | Return to Top
