Hope for Lynxes

THE Department of the Environment of Andalucia is currently in negotiations with the government of Portugal to back the ‘Interreg project’ which is aimed at fostering cross-border development of the area’s natural environment.

One of the proposed projects involves the re-introduction into the area of the native Iberian lynx.

To this end, it is proposed that a purpose-built centre would be created, within the Portuguese territory, in which to house the lynxes within a specially-created environment which will ensure the best chance of reproduction and survival of the species once they are released into their natural habitat.

The regional government of Andalucia proposes to share its specific knowledge and experience of the breed with the relevant Portuguese institutions and the ‘Zoobotanico’ in Jerez and the ‘Centro de cria en cuatividad’ in El Acebuche are to collaborate in the creation of the new centre, to be situated in Algarve.

An information system, entitled ‘Iberlinx’, will also be created, through which scientists from both centres can collate all the relevant information on the project and its related links.
