It is that time of year again for Christmas parties, Christmas concerts and especially end of term school Christmas shows, so how do people feel about all this and how do school Christmas shows differ from those in the UK. EWN went out and about to ask some families and friends their opinions.

This week in EWN, in the run up to Christmas day, we ask people put on their Christmas hats, take a trip down memory lane and tell us about their fondest Christmas memories.

THE Spirit of Christmas… is it still alive and well, or is the festive season nowadays just a reason to spend too much and eat too much? Do people get together with friends and relatives at Christmas because they really want to, or is it just because they are forced into it by tradition? This week, Euro Weekly News goes out in the cold and windy streets of Arroyo de la Miel to ask people how they really feel about Christmas cheer?

EVA_SANCHEZ This week, EWN went out and about, asking the local Spanish people how they feel about the run up to Christmas, especially those who work in shops, department stores and commercial centres on the island and also how they feel about Christmas this year.

THIS week, the rain prevented us from going out to get the ‘Word of Mouth’ on the local streets, but a conversation at the EWN gave us plenty of material. We have all received presents from people that have left us wondering what they were thinking when they bought them, but everyone has had great presents too… what was YOUR best and worst present ever?

NOWADAYS, nearly everybody has a computer, but not all of us use it for the same things or depend upon it to the same degree. But have computers made our lives easier? Or are they more of a nuisance when something goes wrong now that we practically depend upon them? We ask our readers what they think.

Myriam_Puertas THERE has been much controversy about social networking sites and many parents fear they can be dangerous for their children. Many people claim to be addicted and say they can’t spend a day without logging on, whereas others see them simply as a bit of harmless fun. We went out on the street to find out what people think.

There has been a lot of talk lately, especially in the press and on British television about the right to die with dignity and, of course, euthanasia, so EWN asked for people’s views on this particularly delicate subject.

As soon as the heavens open in a land that is supposed to have a hot sun – even if it’s a cold country, as Hemingway would have it – us expatriates can be heard to cry, “there’s nothing to do in Spain when it’s raining!”

Jose_Luis_Canamo Spain’s government has assured us that the recession has already hit its lowest point and that the country’s economic situation is on the way up. Although Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero predicts a ‘tough autumn’, he says that within a year, the financial crisis will be no more than a gloomy memory for workers and business owners all over Spain. At the same time, France and Germany are said to have almost clawed their way out of the recession, and Spain has the dubious honour of being the worst-affected country in the European Union. This week, Euro Weekly News asked a selection of readers and local business owners whether they think the recession is more or less over, and whether it has affected them or their professions...

juan_manuel_cuenca SPANISH Health Minister Trinindad Jimenez has said that Spanish society is ready to ban tobacco from all public spaces. In Spain it was forbidden to smoke in working centres and public premises from January 1, 2006, but still businessmen are allowed to choose whether they allow smoking in their bars and restaurants if these are less than 100 square metres… but most of these businessmen have decided to allow smokers in their premises

There has been a lot of discussion recently about owners and their dogs when they are out and about. In many countries in Europe, such as Austria, Germany, France, Belgium etc. where dogs are allowed automatically in bars and restaurants and are allowed on buses and in taxis, whereas here in Spain, at least  in the majority of cases, it is frowned upon to say the least, so EWN went out to talk to people in the street as to their views and opinions on this matter.

mike_stokes WITH the Basque Separatist terrorist group ETA’s attacks on holiday resorts like Mallorca, reports that the organisation was on its last legs seems to have lost credibility. With terrorists targeting popular resorts like Mallorca, we asked if this is having an effect on holidaymakers and expats. We canvassed the opinion of a couple of each and asked if recent attacks has made them feel less safe in Spain.

It’s the tourist season and the beaches are packed, the motorways are heaving with traffic and bright-red holidaymakers with white strap-marks are omnipresent. This year, fewer tourists have made their way to our shores because of the recession, especially given that a ‘sun, sea and sand’ package can be cheaper to other destinations such as Sharm el-Sheikh or the Greek Islands. Yet others still profess to prefer Spain for their holidays. Euro Weekly News asked a few of this year’s tourists why they like it so much, and what they aren’t so keen on…

Michael Jackson suffered a heart attack and passed away at only 50 years of age. Jackson has had a true impact on culture in the last 25 years. John Lennon and Elvis Presley became legendary when they died and, after his death, Michael Jackson has instantly become a legend. This week we pay tribute to this great and controversial artist. We hit the streets and asked people which were their
