The Japanese have come up with a simple device to tell your partner’s real age. It’s a cheap and simple gadget. The older we get the less high frequencies we hear. The key ring sized box emits a series of high frequency tones starting with one only children can hear. The next tone is lower and only teenagers hearing remains sharp enough to detect it. You keep turning the dial until your other half hears the noise. The dial then corresponds to their supposed age. Not sure what happens if you are older than them though as you won’t hear it either.

If you delete a file from your computer getting it back is usually possible. In basic terms the file is data on your computers drive. If you delete a file the first thing that happens is it will go to the Recycle bin. In fact not much has happened on your hard drive at this stage. Just the label giving the location of the file has changed. It’s easy to go into the Recycle bin and return the file to its original location. Once you empty the recycle bin the file’s label changes again and as far as your operating system is concerned the file has gone and cannot be accessed again.

For those who just have to modify everything, overclocking your computer is a way of making things run faster for free. Beware though it takes you into a world outside of manufacturers warranties and can cause problems with reliability and over heating so don’t say you weren’t warned.

    Q. MY desktop computer has started crashing as soon as it boots up. On some days it will run OK and then on others just go as far as the Windows logo. It’s six years old and the only problems I have ever had are with the graphics card. Could this be my problem?

LED_TV_web ONCE upon a time the world was only in black and white so we only needed a black and white TV to see it in all its glory. Then just after we got rid of the old money someone changed everything into colour and we needed new colour tellies to enjoy this new world. I think that’s how it went, it was before my time, nearly. Anyway since then just when we have worked out how to tune in our new TV someone tells us we need a different one with a new type of display. And now it’s happening again with LED television.

NO matter how new your computer is, sooner or later you are going to find yourself sitting in front of it twiddling your thumbs waiting for it to finish a task. Nowadays computers are better than ever but as time goes on there’s the gradual build up of junk in the computers operating system slowing it down. It might feel like a war you can’t win but there are several battles that you can:

windows-phone-web Digital News - Now we have Windows “Phone.” Coming soon Microsoft is launching a radically new user interface for its smart phone software. The change in name from Windows Mobile to Windows ‘Phone’ coincides with a new approach to navigation. It has panes which you can slide around the screen rather than the windows we are used to opening and closing. Faster to use and more intuitive it’s a bold move by Microsoft and looks set to sell well.

Q: I use Skype a lot but when the headset is plugged into the computer I can’t hear when someone is calling me. What should I do? A: There is a way around this on some PCs. In the Skype program go to: tools, options, audio settings. Tick the box that reads ‘ring pc speaker’. You can leave your headset in now and still hear Skype ringing. But check you have a speaker actually inside your PC, not speakers that are plugged in the back.

More and more people are starting to use computers in a revolutionary new way. The concept is cloud computing. Instead of having all your programs and software on your home pc or laptop you have everything on a central server and you access it remotely. You use the internet to get to your stored files and then use programs that run on a computer, possibly on the other side of the world to edit your files.

Do you ever use a USB pen drive to carry computer data with you? With capacities of over 32 gigabytes they are superb way carrying word documents, MP3 files and even films in a small portable format. But being so small they are easy to lose. I have left at least two stuck in the back of computers in internet cafes. Of course they weren’t there when I went back. Luckily they contained no personal information. Bit if you have e mails or passwords backed up on a pen drive you do need some form of security.

NO, not mosquitoes. It’s still a bit early as all the recent rain will testify. Buzz is the new social networking application from Google. After Facebook, My Space and twitter, Google wants a slice of the social networking pie. It’s basically the same concept we have been offered from all the others.

shutterstock_335955201_web When I started messing around with computers all the software you needed to run the thing were on a few floppy disks. When it invariably crashed you just re installed everything and did as much work as you could until the next time. This was normally because the operating system software was frankly not quite stable enough for the job. Mac users I am sure will be writing in to say not with theirs.

shutterstock_4599427_web IF you buy a computer down here be aware that it will probably be in Spanish and most of the big stores are too busy to help you get it running in English. There is a solution though. With Windows Vista and Windows 7 you can change the display language. It depends a bit on which version you have.

iStock_000004005794Medium_web WHEN Santa comes this year with a bit of luck you might just receive a nice 780,000 euro stereo. Not a misprint. That’s seven hundred and eighty thousand euros to listen to Madonna. Well maybe you might be into classical or jazz as well at that price.

New smaller more efficient wind turbines are coming. The windmills we see on hillsides generating electricity could soon look very different. A US company, Flo Design has secured funding to further develop a next generation turbine. It looks like a jet engine and works much more efficiently than our current windmills. The manufacturer claims the turbines provide a power output 2 or 3 times greater than conventional wind farms.  The biggest question is whether they can be built cheaply enough as they are a much more complicated design.

    Q. I use Microsoft Outlook  2007. If I get an e mail with pictures in it you can’t see them, only a little red cross. Why? A. This is to protect you from viruses that can be hidden with the picture. If you know the sender right click on the image and select “download images” to see the images. You can turn this feature off permanently. Click “tools” and select “trust centre” then “automatic downloads”. Now un-check the tick in the box marked “Don’t download pictures automatically.” Now you will always see the pictures.

Turning off at the switch can save you money on your electricity bills MOST people have heard about not leaving their television on standby when they do go to bed. Instead of just turning it off with the remote actually turn it completely off using the power button on the set itself. Fair enough but one device that is a little more problematic is your satellite receiver. With most of these the off switch just puts the thing into standby. They still use power. Many are actually hot when you put your hand on them in the morning when they have been on standby all night.

stay safe online from viruses, malware and trojans Did my Trojan horse catch a virus from the worm in my spam? Is it all Greek to you when it comes to computer infections? If you have a computer then you need protection. But what should you use. Viruses, Trojan horses, worms and malware are all basically software that get into your computer, either by tricking you into downloading it, disguised as a music file or a document, or worse still by sneaking in invisibly. Once in they can let hackers see your private data and also stop your machine working properly. Sometimes terminally.
