IN clearly difficult economic times, with the insurance sector decreasing for the fourth consecutive year, Linea Directa Aseguradora has closed 2012 with the highest profit levels in its history: 121.5 million euros before tax, representing an increase of 13 per cent on the previous year.
There have been three main reasons for this: the sharp rise in the number of customers, effective underwriting risk management and the improvement of all the company’s processes and services, which have enabled it to reduce expenses without diminishing the scope of the cover offered.
As a result, the total number of policies, which since last February has exceeded two million, rose by over 105,000 last year, mainly thanks to the Home Insurance Area, which in the five years since it was launched, now has over 230,000 policies without having resorted to mergers or acquisitions.
The International Area, a strategic business
Linea Directa offers its foreign policyholders living in Spain all its services in English and German. As a result, purchasing the policy, making enquiries, dealing with accidents, sending documentation and 24-hour road assistance can all be carried out both in English and German, at a time which suits the policyholder and with only one phone call. In addition, Línea Directa’s International Area offers its policyholders a translation service which they can use for dealing with repairers.
The International Area is a key strategic factor for Línea Directa, through which the company offers its foreign customers totally exclusive services, discounts and offers.

EUROPE’S economic woes haven’t dented our appetite for travel. If anything, we’re intent on getting the most out of our much-needed getaways, and on the lookout for bargains.
There are certainly some excellent deals to be had, as operators and destinations compete for our custom. Meanwhile, more people are turning to short breaks as a way of getting a travel ‘fix’ while spreading the budget. If you’re one of them, taking out an Annual Multi Trip policy with Globelink Travel Insurance makes obvious savings sense.
But there’s one thing you shouldn’t be economical about, and that’s what you tell your insurer regarding your medical history. Every year, a significant number of Brits head abroad with a travel policy that’s invalid even before they reach the check-in desk. They’re the people who, through naivety or misplaced guile, don’t come clean about pre-existing health facts that may affect the terms of their insurance. Every year, some of them find themselves left without adequate travel cover, as the condition they kept mum about suddenly flares up and requires medical attention. No point in hoping the insurance claims investigators won’t cotton on to the facts. They always do, that’s their job!
Being coy about material medical details could end up costing you a great deal. Need to cut your holiday short due to ill health? There goes around £750 (€880) on average. Add the cost of medical expenses while abroad, and you could be looking at more than twice that sum, depending on where in the world you are.
If your condition warrants your flying home with a medical escort, expect to run up an average bill of around £4,000 (€4,700) in Europe - and that’s flying economy-class. As for repatriation by air ambulance from the US or Australia, typical costs run into tens of thousands.... Not the kind of holiday ‘splurge’ most people budget for.
As of April this year, a new UK consumer law should make it harder for travellers to invalidate their travel insurance by inadvertently failing to disclose important facts relating to their health. That can only be a good thing, since it should help to cut down claims disputes. But the flip-side is that the law does expect you to fill out the online form honestly and accurately when applying for, or renewing your travel insurance. A ‘little white lie’ could leave you without proper cover precisely when you need it most.
Non-disclosure makes even less sense when your condition might actually be eligible for automatic coverage. At Globelink Travel Insurance, our policies embrace a large number of pre-existing conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, provided you have no related complications. If in doubt, contact us; we’re here to help.

MONASRTELL is the king of red grapes in southern Spain and the Costa Blanca region and this is a great time to go out and taste a few Monastrell wines as the sales are on and you are sure to pick up a bargain or two.
The Monastrell grape has a long and distinguished history, even surviving the phylloxera disease that wiped out most of the grapes in Europe in the late nineteenth century. Monastrell wines tend to have dark strong colours and develop high alcohol contents due to the grape basking in plenty of sunlight.
Variety and authenticity best describe the Alicante wine’s recent renaissance and the Monastrell is one of the pillars of the regional grapes. The Sierra Salinas winery is a fairly new installation at around 600m above sea level and has some great examples. Try a few of the elegant Monastrells such as ‘Puerto Salinas’ a classic Mediterranean red with a red cherry colour, good integrated oak and ripe red fruits. It is currently on sale at €6. ‘Mira’ (€21) is a more sophisticated Monastrell with noble oak, liquorice and aromas of Morello cherries and a velvety long taste.
La Bodega de Pinoso is situated in Dnomination of Origin (DO) Alicante and is the largest producer of organic wines in all of the Valencian Community. You can find variety and authenticity with a classic range of wines under the brand 'Vermador' (€4- €6) and a New World type of more fruity and pungent range under the name 'Vergel' (€7).
Yecla is at the heart of Murcia's winemaking tradition, upheld over the centuries by its devoted winemakers and growers, giving high-quality wines made from the Monastrell variety. Yecla has been producing wine since Phoenician times, with plenty of archaeological findings to prove the relevance it reached during the Roman occupation. The area’s best known and largest vineyard is Bodegas Castaño. Their most famous bottle, Hecula costing €7, is named after the Roman name of Yecla and is made from the Monastrell variety.
Jumilla has been making quality wine since the early 1800's. It's fame harks back to Roman ‘Hispania’ and the region enjoyed a boom in the late nineteenth century, when it appeared to be spared the phyollxera plague that was ravishing vineyards across Europe. The secret lies in the local Monastrell variety, which is perfectly suited to the area’s conditions. This grape is the basis of all wines under the Jumilla denomination and covers 85 per cent of all land under vines. Try some of the fine examples from Finca Lúzon like 'Lúzon Roble' (€7,50) with sweet spices, toasty and smooth, and 'Castillo Lúzon (€10) with well developed tannins, rich red fruits and vanilla notes.
All these bottles and more can be found at Bodegas MG, Calle Ramon y Cajal, Benijofar, call 966 714 960 for more information.

RELIABLE UK TV THROUGH YOUR INTERNET
No matter how enthusiastically UK expats embrace the Spanish culture, many us of will always want to have the choice to sit down in the evening
and watch Coronation or Eastenders. Having lived in Spain for nearly ten years we've seen many systems available to offer the Brits a solution to their TV requirements... some "alegal" some just down right illegal. It's a disappointing situation that most of us find a bit of a minefield. Why it has to be this way is a mystery to us all.
We believe most would be willing to pay a UK TV license or even a Sky subscription through our Spanish bank accounts if it meant getting a quality television service. Sadly, that's not an option.
In the last year we here in Spain had a little miracle and have been able to receive Freeview. In lay-man term this happened simply because of a realignment taking place with Sky. They are using a "holding" system that has worked out well for us Expats in Spain. Unfortunately this is coming to an end in the up and coming year, although again what month this may happen is not clear.
The good news is that nearly 3 years ago at Telitec, we pre-empted this scenario and looked into the IPTV solution, a UKTV system that ran via internet (IPTV: internet protocol TV). There is no denying there were some frustrating teething problems. However our perseverance paid off and we can now offer the most amazing, high quality and
versatile UKTV service here in Spain today.
It is quite simply a plug and play system that even the most untechnical
of us can operate. A set top box is required (from 160€*) which connects to your ADSL internet router, and of course your TV with a HDMI or 3-pin connection and hey presto, high quality UKTV. The box is Wireless so no unsightly cables or wires! Don't tell anyone, but you don't even need Telitec's ADSL service, any 3mb ADSL service works!
- WATCH LIVE
- REWIND / CATCHUP TV
(don’t miss any program from the last 7 days)
- NO DISH, NO CONTRACT
- WIRELESS CONNECTION
(from router to set-top box)
- BUILT IN WHAT’S ON GUIDE
- 25+ CHANNELS
Better still this service is the only one in Spain to offer a rewind facility with our unique software. So never again do you have to miss your favourite programs. When your visitors leave or you return home from that meal out, sit down, scroll back (up to 7 days) and catch up .
No dishes are required and better still there is no contract . If you are only
here for 6 months of the year why pay for 12? We now have thousands of happy clients using the service and it is the future of high quality legal UKTV, not just in Spain but all over the world.
- EXISTING CLIENTS: 19,99€/mth + 160€ for SET TOP BOX
- NEW COMBO OFFER: 54,99€/mth +160€ for SET TOP BOX
includes up to 4MB ADSL, telephone landline, 120 free call to EU, monthly UKTV subscription
- NOT WITH TELITEC? 24,99€/mth + 200€ for SET TOP BOX
*Subject to terms & conditions. ** Minimum System Requirement: 3mb ADSL connection. TV with HDMI or RCA 3 pin connection, 4 port router (cable or wi-fi), UK postal address (friend or family). ***All prices subject to IVA
IN Clinica Eurocan Campello, we have the philosophy of providing a friendly caring attitude for both pets and their owners. We specialize in the treatment of small animals, dogs, cats rabbits, hamsters and all small exotic animals.
Cat’s Waiting Room - We have recently incorporated a brand new waiting room especially for cats and their owners. We’ve done this bearing in mind of the stress often suffered by cats when in the presence of dogs when in one area, and it’s proved a big success. Plus nowadays we offer the latest technique for sterilization for female cats where the procedure involves the minimum invasion - only a 1cm incision – and recuperation time is minimal. Using this latest procedure, last year we carried out over 250 sterilizations for both street cats, and those belonging to private clients.
The range of services we offer is complete, including radiography, echography, lab analysis, surgery, nutritional advice, dermatology, and much much more.
In 2013 we are trying to help battle the current economic crisis with cost conscious prevention campaigns, sterilization, vaccination, animal geriatric care, teeth cleaning, and microchips for cats and exotics, and all priced especially to make such essential treatments more accessible to our clients.
We also offer a professional grooming service for your pets, for both style and hygiene, by our in house experts, who offer service tailor designed to any breed of pet.
Open Monday-Friday 8.30am through to 8.30 pm. And Saturdays 10am-2pm. We’re also based in Playa de Muchavista where we offer both Veterinary services and Grooming facilities by private appointment. And we do 24 emergency calls!
Why not call in to our surgery with your pet or just any queries you may have. We’ll be delighted to help. You’ll find us in Avenida Germanias 7, El Campello. Tel. 965 634 188, or for emergencies, 610 394 097.
BODYWORKS HEALTH CLINIC
IN the run up to Christmas many of us put off dealing with niggling health issues or concerns - we don’t want bad news just before the holidays or we simply don’t have time to start anything that may take a while to resolve. So January becomes the time when we can finally do something.
Many of us make New Year’s resolutions to “lose weight” and “get fit” but perhaps we should also think about our health for the coming year. Maybe on your list of New Year’s resolutions should be getting that pain in your back or your knees sorted so why not make 2013 the year you take charge of your health?
Here are a few tips:
Get to know your body.
Pay attention and get to know your body. Any changes can indicate problems. Key changes to look out for are:
- any changes to your bowel movements
- changes in colour or size of moles
- for women, any changes to the skin or feel of your breasts or pain in the pelvic region.
If you are in pain or discomfort and this has been going on for more than 48 hours, get professional help! The sooner you get professional help the quicker the problem will be resolved and importantly, the cheaper will be the cost!
Being sick and in pain is scary stuff but when it comes to your body, you are your own best advocate so you need to take charge. If you aren’t 100 per cent happy with the advice or recommendations that have been given, get a second or even a third opinion. All health care professionals should be confident enough in their recommendations that they are happy if you seek another opinion. Also, always ask WHY something is being recommended and ask what other options there may be. Taking drugs or getting an injection may not be the best for you.
Get a health check
We all know that our cars work better if we get them serviced regularly, in fact manufacturers often won’t honour a guarantee without such servicing. Our bodies are far more complex than cars so get a check-up - a review that all your systems are working and that there are no “warning lights”. This is money well spent if it means you can prevent more serious problems from occurring later.
Think about what doctors can’t fix
The conventional healthcare system affects as little as 10 per cent of your health. The remaining 90 per cent of health outcomes are determined by factors over which only you have control, lifestyle choices, social conditions, diet and nutrition, and your environment. Take steps to enhance your own well being and you’ll be healthier than relying solely on the healthcare system.
Take charge of yourself in 2013!
For information on Full Body Screening or indeed how we can help in any other way, contact The Bodyworks Health Clinic on 952 883 151 or visit www.TheBodyworksClinic.com.
Spain is widely regarded as one of the best summer holiday destinations in Europe. However, there a good number of reasons to visit this beautiful Mediterranean country during the winter. You'll find that travel companies such as Directline-holidays offer tempting discounts as a means of enticing people to travel at this time of year. You may also be able to secure relatively inexpensive hotel accommodation during the months from December through to February. Those of you who book winter tickets to Spain can look forward to the following activities.
Snow Shoeing And Hiking
The Spanish Pyranees and Sierra Nevada mountains are usually covered in snow during the winter months. Intrepid explorers have the opportunity to hire snow shoes and purpose-made hiking boots for walks across the snowy landscape. It may even be possible to spot birds such as the Lammegeler or Alpine Accentor at this time of year.
Copa Nadal Swimming Competition
If you are confident of your ability to swim and withstand cold temperatures then why not join the crowds for a dive into the waters of the Barcelona Harbour on Christmas Day. After the extreme physical and mental challenge you may enjoy a traditional Christmas meal at one of the inner city restaurants.
Whether you're interested in purchasing Spanish craft items or designer clothes, it is worth taking a tour of the shops and markets of Barcelona. Many of the trade sellers offer substantial discounts on their products during the month after Christmas.
The colourful and lively Spanish carnival is held at the end of February each year. The street music acts and rhythmic dancers keep the crowds entertained from early morning until late evening. After watching the parade you can enjoy the shows that take place in the entertainment venues of Tenerife and Cadiz.
