World's biggest online retailer Amazon opens first physical bookshop in the US

AMAZON is opening its first physical bookstore in Seattle 20 years after the company began selling books on the internet.

The new shop is named Amazon Books at University Village and is based in the company’s home city of Seattle.

The shop will have around 6,000 books and all stock will be available for the same price as on the website. The books have been selected based on sales and reviews at Amazon.com.

Amazon is the world’s biggest online retailer however they have been experimenting with traditional retailing by establishing pick up points for online customers to collects their purchases and kiosks selling such gadgets as the Kindle e-reader.

This store in Seattle however is the first full traditional bookshop to be opened by Amazon. Vice President of Amazon Books, Jennifer Cast, said that the store is “a physical extension of Amazon.com. We’ve applied 20 years of online bookselling experience to build a store that integrates the benefits of offline and online book shopping.

“The books in our store are selected based on Amazon.com customer ratings, preorders, sales, popularity on Goodreads, and our curators’ assessments.

“To give you more information as you browse, our books are face-out, and under each one is a review card with the Amazon.com customer rating and a review. You can read the opinions and assessments of Amazon.com’s book-loving customers to help you find great books,” she added
