HOLLYOAKS favourite Gemma Merna announced she was leaving the Channel 4 soap recently, so it was only a matter of time before her character, bubbly blonde Carmel McQueen, was killed off.

Her exit was hinted at in Channel 4’s promo for the End of the Line episode, which showed Carmel disappearing while on a train with Theresa McQueen, played by Jorgie Porter.

After Carmel’s last episode was shown on Monday, she was praised enormously for her performance by both her cast mates and twitter fans, a lot of them recommending that her exit deserved a soap award.

But one little girl found it difficult to understand that Carmel was Gemma’s character, and that the actress wasn’t actually dead.

Eight-year-old Ashlee Charles was reportedly in tears at the soap when she thought her idol Gemma had actually died, so her mother Delyth decided to tweet Gemma asking her to reassure her distraught, young daughter.

The kind-hearted Gemma proceeded to direct message Delyth for her number so she could call the little girl in person.

Delyth spoke to the Liverpool Echo and said:

"Gemma was so lovely. She rang Ashlee and said I'm fine, it is just because I’m leaving the show, and not to be upset.

“Ashlee was so overwhelmed, she absolutely idolises Gemma and she was so excited to have spoken to her that she wouldn’t go to sleep.”

A firm favourite, and part of the notorious McQueen family who have featured in Hollyoaks for years, both fans and cast mates were exceptionally sad to see her leave.

Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays Gemma’s on-screen sister Mercedes McQueen has also announced her departure from the soap.
