In the new BBC documentary ‘David Beckham: Into The Unknown’, the star said he had gone through "a stage of enjoying the rest" but was now yearning for a return to soccer.
Beckham described enduring "a tough time" after quitting football. He said: "Now I go to watch a basketball game and, when you are watching athletes play at the top of their game, for me it gives me that itch again and I want to be back in the game then.
"I start thinking to myself 'Could I play again? Could I go back? Could I come out of retirement and start playing again?'"
Beckham, who played for teams including Spanish giants Real Madrid and LA Galaxy throughout his trophy-laden career, is currently launching his own Major League Soccer team in Florida’s Miami.
And the ex-player has hinted that he may even play for the team. He said: "There's never been a player-owner but maybe?"
The BBC documentary, which sees the former footballer journey into the Amazon rainforest, will air next Monday.
