Ask the Optician – Common queries answered

OPTOMETRISTS and dispensing opticians at Specsavers Opticas use their wealth of experience every day to advise customers. Here, Lisa James, Store Director from Specsavers Opticas Guardamar answers some common queries about glasses.

Q - My glasses don’t fit properly and slip down my nose. Does this matter?
A - Badly-fitting glasses can affect your vision. If the lenses are too far from your eyes the glasses will seem too weak if you are short-sighted, or too strong if you are longsighted. Fit is also very important for bifocals and varifocals wearers, due to the positioning of the different prescription zones. Your glasses should also be comfortable. If they need refitting, take them in to your local Specsavers.

Q - My high prescription makes my glasses lenses thick, ugly and uncomfortable. Can anything be done?
A - Thin+Light lenses will make a huge difference. They are thinner and lighter than standard, and so are more comfortable and improve the appearance of your glasses. They are suitable for all frames, particularly lightweight styles.

Q - My colleague wears different glasses for working at a computer. Does everyone need them?
A - Using a computer for long periods can cause headaches. Shifting your gaze from screen to keyboard means your eyes have to change focus quickly, resulting in eyestrain. Specially-tailored glasses can help, including lenses that correct your vision at the intermediate distance between your eyes and the screen or tints and lens treatments to reduce screen glare.

Q – I want to try contact lenses, but am worried I might not be able to wear them. What do you recommend?
A - Soft contact lenses would be a good first option. These are the most popular type worn today. In being very pliable and soft, they are easy to get used to and comfortable to wear. Soft contact lenses are suitable for occasional use and even people with sensitive eyes can usually get on with them. As they are not easily dislodged they are also ideal for sport. The team at Specsavers Opticas are always happy to answer queries to put your mind at rest and are currently offering free eye tests.
