Dog owner sentenced to pay compensation

THE owner of a Pit Bull which injured a young girl has been sentenced to pay her €8,125 in compensation.

The attack occurred in Alhaurin de la Torre in May 2010 when the dog, which wasn’t wearing a muzzle, escaped from its owner.

He did not have civil liability insurance, which is obligatory for owners of dogs on the list of potentially dangerous breeds, such as Pit Bulls.

He has also been sentenced to pay a fine of €100 for an offence against general interests.

Meanwhile, the owner of two boxers which escaped from his home in Estepona and jumped at a woman has been sentenced to pay a fine of €150.

The woman sustained a broken arm when the dogs pushed her over. In this case, the owner did have insurance, and the victim will be paid €3,000 in compensation.

The insurance company had appealed the sentence of a local court saying that the dogs did not attack the woman, but simply jumped at her because they were excited.

The judge rejected the argument saying that it was the owner who was being tried for not controlling them properly.
