TEN members of the Javea Civil Protection Rescue Team and the Hikers’ Centre, carried out a rescue drill in the Les Pesqueres del Cap de la Nau area last week which was a huge success and involved the presence of 100 people.
Amongst those present were the Mayor of Javea, Eduardo Monfort, the Councillor for Civil Protection, Juan Ortola, the local team coordinator, Juan Pastor, the Government Council technician, Paco Beltran, volunteer firemen from Balcon al Mar, Local Police, Red Cross, and volunteers from Javea, Gata and Benitachel Civil Protection.
The teams proved the capacity of coordination and group work during a 90-minute exercise which consisted in rescuing an injured victim who was supposed to have fallen down one of the vertical cliff walls. The rough sea and the presence of high tension cables in the area prevented the victim from being rescued by air or sea.
The victim was immobilized by the team and using pulleys and lines, transported on a stretcher to a place of safety. The victim was lifted 50 metres and then moved a further 60 metres.
Eduardo Monfort has valued the exercise as very positive and important to prepare the rescue teams in case a real accident should occur in the area. Normally, Civil Protection works as back up for the emergency services and the Valencian Territorial Potholing Federation, so their collaboration in this type of mission could be vital.
