Historic shipwreck discovered

The shipwreck is believed to be the remains of a frigate or a galleon

A warship from the 17th century has reportedly been found on the seadbed just off the north coast of Menoría.

The Argo Maris Marine Foundation has informed the Heritage Department of the Council of Menorca concerning the sighting, which it believes to be the remains of a frigate or galleon.

Some months ago, the foundation received notification from fisherman and diver, Felix Ripoll that he had managed to detect the presence of a sunken vessel in an easily accessible location.

The Council subsequently sent a remote controlled submarine to explore the area, but initial archaeological investigations failed to establish the origin of the wreck.

They were, however, able to confirm the presence of 17 cast iron cannons, each two metres in length, four huge prow and stern anchors, together with other remains some 60 metres down and spread out over an area of 40 metres.

Both the Foundation and the archaeological team have decided not to try and move any part of the wreck for the moment, but will be making further tests next year.
