Spread of swine flue slower than on the Mainland

Low swine flu figures reported

The virus seems to have become stationary on the islands.

According to Vicenc Thomas, Regional Health Minister, the spread of swine flue in the Balearic Islands is running at a slightly lower rate than in the rest of the country.

Speaking in Palma recently, Thomas said that data collected from between October 4 to October 10 showed that there were 89,56 cases of swine flu for every 100,000 of the population in the islands, whilst the national average was showing a rate of 98.65 cases.

He went on to confirm that the virus seemed to have become stationary, but did warn that it was likely to spread further during the winter months. However, he added that there is no cause for alarm and recommended that people continue to tae normal preventative measures such as frequent hand washing.

Across the country as a whole, some 42,000 cases have been confirmed resulting from the H1N1 virus, but the rate of contagion has, however, showed down in comparison to previous weeks.
