Posthumous honour for Guardia Civil ETA victim in Mallorca

A presentation was made of the Balearic Island Gold Medal, the region’s highest honour.

The President of the Balearic Islands, Francesc Antich, recently travelled to Burgos to honour Carlos Saenz, one of the two members of the Guardia Civil who were killed this summer at the Palma Nova Headquarters of the Guardia Civil in a car bomb attack by ETA.

Carlos Saenz and Diego Salva, who lived in Palma, both died simultaneously when an explosive device which was attached to the underside of a Guardia Civil vehicle exploded outside the Palma Nova barracks just moments after the two had got into the vehicle.

On July 31, the Balearic Island government posthumously awarded the two Civil Guards the Balearic Island Gold Medal, the region’s highest honour.

Salva’s medal was presented to his family here in October and just recently, Antich presented Saenz’s medal to his parents in a special ceremony attended by local politicians and Guardia Civil chiefs in Burgos.
