Balearic Islands Annual flu vaccination has begun

The vaccination period is getting underway two weeks earlier than usual.

The annual flu vaccination campaign has begun already, earlier than usual, so that it does not clash with the forthcoming Swine Flu vaccination.

This year, the vaccination period is getting underway two weeks earlier than usual and is expected to last until November 6.

According to sources, a total of 185,000 doses of flu vaccine are going to be distributed across the Balearic Islands by the Ministry of Health and will cost over one million euros.

Josep Pomar, Director General of the IB-Salut Balearic Island Health Service, estimates that over 133,000 people will be vaccinated against the common form of flu, with 110,000 of those in Mallorca.

Due to the possible threat posed by Swine flu this winter, the health service has extended its network of flu control and monitoring centres in order to be able to keep a close check on the situation.

Those people within the high risk level are the over 65’s, patients suffering from chronic illness, care home residents, hospital patients and women who are more than 14 weeks pregnant.
