End of the botellon – Town Hall prohibits youths drinking alcohol on the streets of Malaga City

Up to 5,000 youngsters congregate at weekends to socialise. The Town Hall’s master plan? Half priced drinks in city bars

FROM July 10 Malaga Town Hall has prohibited drinking in the streets of the city, putting an end to the traditional botellon, where groups of young people congregate in public spaces on weekends to drink alcohol and socialise. Until July 10 up to 5,000 youngsters were given designated areas like the Paseo de los Curas (by the Malaga port) where they were allowed to do the botellon.

In a pretence to help the disaffected youngsters who will no longer be able to carry out their weekend routine, bars in the area have agreed to reduce the prices of their drinks by at least 50 per cent until 2:30am, something that many say has probably got more to do with cashing in on the new ruling than social benevolence.

Nevertheless, the Town Hall is supporting this cheap drinks initiative and even has a slogan for it ‘Nos Vemos en los Bares’ (We’ll meet in the bars).

This move would no doubt raise an eyebrow or two back in the UK where the authorities have spent the past four years cracking down on cheap drinks in bars in a bid to prevent binge drinking and anti social disorder associated with alcohol.

To enforce the Junta de Andalucia’s 2006 ‘Antibotellon’ byelaw, the Town Hall will be increasing the police presence in the area and will hand out fines of up to 300 euros for people breaking this new rule. If the youngsters are under 16 it will be their parents who will be fined. For people aged between 16 and 19 these fines can be ‘swapped’ for up to 30 days community service.

Anyone who has witnessed the aftermath of a botellon area will agree it is a mess, but the general view about complaints from residents claiming they are a den of iniquity and public disorder is rarely shared.
