Mollie Sugden was best known for her role as blue-rinse department store assistant Mrs Slocombe

ACTRESS Mollie Sugden – famous for her role as Betty Slocombe in the comedy ‘Are You Being Served?’ (1972-1985) – has died aged 86 of natural causes at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.

I her role as Mrs Slocombe she played a hilariously snobbish saleswoman at a department store alongside Wendy Richards, who had a repertoire of double entendres, and a penchant for bouffant.

BBC’s Mark Freeland, Head of Comedy, said: "It is with sadness that the BBC learns of Mollie Sugden's death.

"She will be remembered as a truly funny and instantly recognisable actress – a star of 1970s British comedy.

"She lit up the screens in both The Liver Birds and, most famously, Are You Being Served?

"Her daftly enormous purple rinse and never-to-be-forgotten catchphrase are the stuff of comedy legend and she takes her place as one of TV's iconic funny women."
