Succulents seminar

Sixty varieties of succulents were on display.

The Environment Department in Alhaurin el Grande, in conjunction with the association ‘Free to Live’ (Libres para Vivir) and ACYSA, held a seminar recently about succulent plants, in memory of Jose Farfan Carrasco, which took place in the local Casa de la Cultura. The aim was to provide interesting and useful information about these types of plant (that include aloes and cacti) and explain how they are planted, as well as to offer alternatives to conventional gardening for areas where water may be scarce. The Department of Environment also hopes to stimulate interest among the local youth.
The conference was given in three parts. The first, after the introduction and accreditations, was the official inauguration presided over by the Environment Councillor, Diego Navas; the president of the ACYSA, Jesus Leon and ‘Free to Live’ president Jose Garcia. The second part concentrated on cultivation of cacti and other succulents, and was delivered by a panel of experts that included the director of the Parque de la Paloma in Benalmadena, Jose Maria Lopez, and Russell Wagner, writer for the American magazine Cacti and Succulents Journal. The third and final part of the event was aimed at families (especially children) with an interesting lecture called ‘30 Years of Adventures in the Desert’ by French naturalist Frances Joel Lode. An attractive exhibition of 60 varieties of succulent plants, including agaves, aloes, caudexes and cacti, was on display at the Casa de la Cultura during the event. The Environment Councillor Diego Nava encouraged all residents to attend the seminars, saying: “We have a dedicated children’s area where experts will introduce them to succulent plants and the nature of deserts, with live specimens.”
