New theory claims Menga cave might be a thousand years older

Entrance to the Menga cave near Antequera.

In 2006, traces of carbon sediments were found at the entrance to Menga cave near Antequera and archaeologists decided to analyse them to obtain a chronology of the dolmen usage, which was apparently built in 2,500 B.C., as established by previous investigations. The analysis has now been completed and, according to the carbon-14 tests performed by the University of Uppsala (Sweden), the sediments date back to 3,790 B.C. and 3,730 B.C. This data has led to a new hypothesis that the Menga cave was built a thousand years before previously thought. The new chronologies obtained from the carbon-14 testing would mean the cave was built in the Neolithic Age instead of in the Copper Age.
However, experts say that it is possible the carbon sediments found at the cave could belong to a previous prehistoric settlement.
