The Council of Malaga, as protector of the historic and artistic legacy of the city; the beer company San Miguel, which proved its interest in archaeology at the Atapuerca site; and Fundacion Malaga as the main promoter of the Malaga’s heritage, reached an agreement in 2004 to sponsor and promote the Cerro del Villar archaeological site in Malaga.
Now, four years later, the three entities have renewed their agreement to continue with the work and sponsorship they have been carrying out. The new agreement also considers action on other sites within the province, that are related to the one at Cerro del Villar.
This Phoenician site was one of the more important colonial sites on the Andalucian Coast. Its foundation dates from the VIII century B.C but due to the constant floods suffered in the area, the Phoenician settlers moved to what is known today as Malaga, which they named ‘Malaka’ about 570.
It was discovered by the archaeologist Juan Manuel Muñoz in 1965, and in 1998, the site was declared of general interest by the Andalucian Government.
The agreement enables the following actions relating to the site:
- Publishing the volume of the book ‘El Centro de la Tortuga. El Templo y Necropolis ibero-punico’ by the archaeologist Juan Manuel Muñoz.
- An Exhibition of “M = AGUA” by Douglas Abdell, representing the Phoenician World in the Modern World.
- Model of the Archeodrome of Cerro del Villar, showingthe activity that has been going on since 2005-06
- Creation of a website, www.cerrodelvillar.com, where all the information regarding the site can be found such as: location, chronology, economic resources, pottery manufacturing, plus urbanism, population, publications etc. The website also displays photographs of the different archaeological pieces found.
- In 2006 the documentary ‘Malaga Fenicia’, about the origins and development of the Phoenicians in Malaga, was broadcast. The documentary was also shown at the exhibition ‘Malaga: Foundation of a millennial city’, which was visited by more than 60,000 people.
- Publication of the book ‘En la orilla de Tartessos. Indigenas y fenicios en las tierras malagueñas (siglos XI-VI a.c.)’, by Eduardo Garcia. This book was published in 2007 in order to promote this site and the Phoenician culture developed in Malaga. The book offers the reader rigorous research about the relationships between the Phoenician colonizers and the indigenous peoples from the End of the Bronze Age to the Iron Age in Malaga.
- The ‘Malaka: Foundation of a millennial city’ Project. This project is aimed at children from 8 to 12 years old, and aims to teach the young about their city’s history by letting the children participate and express themselves on this topic. It showed what life was like for this civilization and included remains from artifacts like pottery ovens, household tools and the foundations of ruined houses.
About 2,500 students from towns in Malaga close to the site visited the archeodrome and played the role of archaeologists for one day.
