Battered parents fail to report underage attackers

A SHOCKING one in ten young offenders in the Valencia province have been charged with assaulting their parents.
Youth detention centres throughout the region dealt with 714 underage offenders last year, in connection with 1,283 incidents. A total of 329 were in the province of Valencia. Courts say the average age of offenders is 16 and at least three-quarters are Spanish.
Although aggravated robbery, theft and assault are some of the most common causes of minors being taken into custody, a chilling 10 per cent of the 714 youngsters are on remand for acts of violence against their parents. The worrying statistics were reported to the regional parliament this week.
A leading Valencia judge says the true figures are probably much higher, but such crimes mainly go unnoticed. Domestic violence inflicted by children is largely unrecognised and many parents do not report such incidents. He revealed that the number of these cases has risen by 22 per cent in the last year.
