Video surveillance system to increase safety |
THE town council of Amadora, a suburban town located a few miles north of Lisbon, has approved a recommendation for the installation of CCTV video surveillance systems in areas of the city which suffer the most significant crime problems.
The areas initially to be put under surveillance will include the train stations, tube stations and the central downtown area of the city.
The system will allow the daily surveillance of the activities of more than 100,000 people, 50,000 of whom live in central Amadora.
The cost of setting up the system – one million Euros – will be entirely paid for by the local town council and the system will be operated by PSP Police.
Other cities in Portugal are also considering introducing similar systems to increase safety in some of their more problematic areas.
In the Algarve, the Albufeira Town Council have also announced their intention to introduce a video surveillance system which will be installed in those areas of the town which house the bars and night-clubs.
