Algarve Artists Network free open studio days

For the first time, 12 members of an international group - the Algarve Artists Network - are opening their studios to the public.

Two weekends have been set aside: -
In the Western Algarve from Friday March 28 until Sunday March 30; in the Central Algarve from Friday April 4 until Sunday April 6.

In the case of monumental sculptors, Philippe Claisse -who works with metal – and Colin Figue – who creates from stone – understandably there are significant differences in the ways they work. Visiting their studios reveals a variety of methods.

The ceramic workshop of Mort Figue is a repository of equipment enabling her to produce exceptional Majolica pottery in vibrant colours and innovative styles.

Computer technology is used by Hilary Holt to compose digital collages from photographic images. She juxtaposes shapes and manipulates colours on the screen to produce kaleidoscopic pictures that can be made into prints.
Charlie Holt’s pictures are recognisably shabby-chic using extraordinary photographic print effects on canvas, paint, driftwood, rusted nails, franked postage stamps and other concrete objects.

Portuguese artist Adérita also adds textures to her paintings carefully embellishing the surfaces with items such as sand and sequins to produce highly decorative patterns. She shares her studio with Melita whose figurative paintings often feature dancers. Kerstin Wagner’s paintings are generated by an interest in Chinese philosophy and creating a balance between Yin - the negative, dark and feminine side - and the opposing force of Yang.

Brigitte von Humboldt uses colour as her primary source of inspiration referring to certain shades as ‘nature’s smile’. Jill Stott specialises in dynamic representational pictures of people, often working on commissioned sittings producing sensitive lifelike portraits.

Of this group, perhaps best known in the Algarve are the dreamlike paintings of Meinke Flesseman and Jessica Dunn’s sea and landscapes. Both of these artists’ studios are part of the open weekends. Entry is free.
All of the artists can communicate in English.
