English Freemasons supporting AOA project

THE Worshipful Master Eddy de Bie and Brother John Gilbert from The Lodge of Discoveries No 9409 of the English Freemasons in the Algarve have delivered a cheque for 2,000 euros to the representative of the Oncological Association of the Algarve (AOA), Maria de Lurdes Pereira, at the Hotel Garbe in Armacão de Pera.
As is customary within Freemasonry, the Worshipful Master chooses a charity to which he wishes to donate funds raised through various events organised during his year in office.
These fundraising events included a BBQ, Lunch and, the highlight of the year, the Ladies Night held at the Hotel Garbe, which, according to the organisers of the event this year, once again “went with a bang thanks to the professionalism of the management and staff.”
The Worshipful Master Eddy de Bie chose to support the Cancer Research Unit in Faro as the charity for his year in office.
The AOA is currently building a hostel in Faro, near the Radiotherapy Unit, where patients coming from different parts of the region may stay whilst undergoing radiotherapy treatment. Therefore, this cheque will be put to good use supporting this project.
Eddy de Bie said: “Without the help and support of my fellow masons I could not have achieved raising this sum of money, so I wish to thank everyone for their combined efforts.”
Maria de Lurdes Pereira expressed her admiration for the charitable work of the English Freemasons in the Algarve. She gave heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Oncological Association of the Algarve and assured the freemasons that it would be put to good use. Regular freemasonry has been practised in Portugal since St Patrick’s Day in 1990, when the Prince Henry The Navigator Lodge was consecrated as part of the United Grand Lodge of England to fulfil the aspirations of a group of expatriate English freemasons living in the Algarve.
The lodge was consecrated under the masonic authority of the District Grand Lodge of Gibraltar.
Thereafter, English freemasonry grew steadily.
There are now four English Lodges and two Royal Arch Chapters, operating across the Algarve and in the Greater Lisbon area.
The Lodge of Discoveries No 9409 of the English Freemasons in the Algarve was consecrated in June 1997.
