Citizens honoured at ceremony

MALLORCA’S prestigious Ramon Llull awards for citizens who have made outstanding contributions to the island were presented at a glittering ceremony in    Palma this week.
The presentation, at the city’s Auditorium Theatre, opened with a representation of animal fables from the Libre de les Besties by medieval philosopher Ramon Llull. Balearic leader Jaume Matas then presented the awards, which recognised services to the island in the fields of culture, sports, business, research, education, language and humanitarian work.
Accompanying the government chief were Parliamentary Speaker Pere Rotger, Mayor of Palma Catalina Cirer and deputy leader Rosa Estaras. A Gold Medal was awarded to Bartomeu Catala, founder of drug rehabilitation centre Proyecte Home.
The day ended with a colourful parade along the Paseo Maritimo with more than 700 people.
